Why hotel towels feel different

You've noticed it. A towel in a good hotel has a weight to it that yours at home doesn't. It's not softer exactly — it's denser, more absorbent, and it dries you properly instead of pushing water around.

Most people assume it's the brand, or the laundering, or some trick of the hospitality trade.

It isn't. It's a number, and it's printed on almost nothing you can buy.

GSM — grams per square metre. It's the density of the fabric, and it's the single measurement that determines how a towel actually performs. A supermarket bath towel runs 300 to 400 GSM. A decent one sits around 500. Hotels use 600 to 800, which is why theirs feel like a different product entirely.

The reason you rarely see it advertised is that most towels would come off badly if you did.

The number that misleads instead

Bedding has the opposite problem: a headline figure that everyone quotes and almost nobody understands.

Thread count. It sounds precise — threads per square inch, more is better. Except that from roughly 400 upward it stops correlating with quality at all, and the industry knows it. Manufacturers began twisting multiple thin, weak plies together and counting each ply separately, which is how a bedsheet ends up advertised at 1,200 threads while feeling like paper.

What actually matters is the staple length of the cotton fibre and the quality of the weave. Long-staple cotton at 300 threads outperforms short-staple at 1,000, comfortably and consistently.

So when we describe a product, we tell you the fibre and the construction. Where thread count is genuinely informative, we'll give it. Where it's being used to sell you something, we won't pretend otherwise.

How we choose

Weight and density first. We check the specification before we look at the photograph. In home textiles, weight is the closest thing to an honest proxy for quality — it's hard to fake and hard to disguise.

Fibre before finish. A great deal of what's sold now is finished to feel soft in the shop and loses it after four washes, because softeners wash out and short fibres shed. Long-staple cotton doesn't need the trick.

How it holds up. Towels and bedding are among the hardest-working things you own. They get washed weekly, sometimes hot, for years. Anything that can't take that isn't worth the shelf space.

Plenty doesn't clear those three. That's why the range stays small enough that we can genuinely stand behind each piece.

What we don't do

Chase trends. Home textiles date badly and slowly, which is the worst combination — you notice a colour is wrong about eighteen months after you bought it and then live with it for another three years. We buy things that won't do that.

Inflate to discount. The price is the price. It stays roughly stable through the season, and we're not interested in the "was £79" that was never £79.

Overclaim. A towel won't change your life. What good home textiles actually do is quieter — you stop noticing them, in the specific sense that nothing about them annoys you. No thinness, no scratch, no smell that develops after a month. Just things that work, every day, for years.

That's the whole ambition.

What "luxury" means here

Not excess, and not a price bracket.

Just the difference between a towel that dries you and one that doesn't, and between sheets that feel the same after a year and ones that don't. Those differences are small on any single day and substantial over a few thousand of them.

That's where we think the money is worth spending.

Ask us before you buy

Unsure which weight suits you, or how something washes, or whether a colour works in a north-facing room? Send us a message.

You'll get an answer from someone who has handled the product — not a line lifted from a supplier sheet. We'd rather give you the right advice than process the return.
